Can Sedation Dentistry in Anchorage Help Me Relax and Be Comfortable?

What is Sedation?

Sedation is a process that puts a patient in a relaxed, calm, peaceful or unconscious state.  It usually involves medications but can also involve suggestions to the subconscious.  There are various levels of sedation dentistry in Anchorage and various ways to induce sedation.

Sedation dentistry in Anchorage can come in various forms.  Each has advantages and disadvantages.  Please know that if you are nervous or very afraid of dental visits that there is a form of sedation that will work for you and help you receive the dental care you need or desire in a comfortable manner.

  • 1Nitrous Oxide Gas (laughing gas, happy air, etc.) – this is the most common form of dental sedation. It is very safe and non-invasive. A rubber mask is placed on your nose and you breathe a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. You actually get more oxygen than when you breathe room air. It takes 5-10 minutes to work. Your arms and legs will feel heavy. Your fingers and toes may tingle. You have an “I don’t care” attitude. Everything seems far away. Time seems to go faster. At the end of the procedure you are given 100% oxygen and within a few minutes you will be back to normal again. You are then free to drive, go back to work, etc.
  • 2Oral Conscious Sedation – As the name implies, this form involves taking pills. There are various drugs that can be used for dental sedation. They vary in how fast they work and how long they last. This is minimal sedation technique. You may feel so relaxed you snooze but at any point you can be easily awakened and communicate.
  • 3IV Sedation (parenteral sedation) – This is a deeper sedation. It requires more training and monitoring equipment. This can be done in the dental office or in a surgery center or hospital setting. The good thing is that it works quickly, lasts as long as needed and provides profound sedation. Usually you go to sleep by breathing a special gas and then an IV is placed. Reversal drugs can be readily administered if needed. Like oral conscious sedation you must have a ride home and someone to be with you for the rest of the day.
